The Hardwick

We've been to The Hardwick a few times now. Owned and run by celebrity chef Stephen Terry, it's a fantastic bistro-style pub with a very relaxed atmosphere. If you're lucky you'll be greeted by or met by Stephen's wife, Joanna. Stephen started his trade under Marco Pierre White but has (thankfully) left his michelin-starred past behind and now runs the Hardwick as a great and simple eating establishment producing superb food without the pretentious trimmings. The food here is exceptional and very good value.

We didn't have the 'taste of local beef' to share (£54) but the couple next to us did. It was a huge affair. Instead, we started with "Welsh Rarebit on Slow Cooked Ham Hock" and "Linguine with Fresh Devon White Crab Meat, Rocket, Courgettes, Chilli Flakes, Parsley, Shallot, Wild Garlic, Radichio and Anchovy" (£9 and £13). For mains we selected the "Local Pedigree Pork Tender Loin" and "21 Day Dry Aged Johnny Morris Ribeye Steak" (£22 and £23). Presentation is wonderful and I didn't know a ribeye could taste this good.

It's a long drive for us but, now and again, well worth it.

We were very lucky to have a a good long chat with Stephen at the bar on our way out. He is one of the most pleasant people you can meet and certainly very approachable. We chatted about his food and his recent appearance on The Great British Menu (2012).

The Hardwick now has a large extension and rooms. We'll be back.
