 The Hunters Inn, Exmoor

The Hunters Inn is a great inn, pub and restaurant serving some rather tasty and very well presented dishes along with a superb array of local ales and brews. We used it for a couple of nights during a short walking break this month on Exmoor. It's a very popular but isolated establishment set in the Exmoor's Heddon Valley on the north Devon coast. There are numerous walks that can be started form this inn. Unfortunately the weather wasn't stable enough for our main walk to Woody Bay and back using the coastal path, which was a shame. Nevertheless we did manage a short drive and 8-mile walk to Lynmouth and back on one rainy day.

The restaurant, at the back of the inn (in the middle of the above shot) has stunning views over the tidy garden though the valley to north. The food was superb. I had the "T-bone steak" on the first night and "sea bass" on the second. The steak was a little thin but otherwise the dishes were very good indeed. We also has the "fish and chips", which was brilliant, with some of the best chips we've tasted in a long while. On the second night we also had "beef and vegetable pie". The cheeseboard was substantial, with three large hunks of cheese, grapes and separate plate of crackers. easily enough for two, or even three.

If you're lucky you'll also be accompanied by one of the resident peacocks perched on the veranda while you're eating.

We were staying in room 7, at the top of the front of the property. A huge if somewhat plain room with separate hallway and bathroom.
