Walk of the Month

Walk of the Month

Dulverton, Exmoor, England

The Dulverton walk in the 'Exmoor' book from the Jarrold Short Walks series is a great half day walk around the hills of Dulverton. The walk is described as Walk No. 12 (2nd Edition, 2007).

After parking just off the road at Marsh Bridge there's a long and steep woodland track rising up out of the valley. It's very rough and uneven so make sure you have very good footwear for this walk. After this point the walk crosses a number fields and turns south and down the hill into Dulvertion. There are a number of tea rooms for refreshments and the village is a very well placed half-way point on this walk. Dulverton is home to the Exmoor National Park Authority with an information centre, a handy stop for information and that last-minute detailed map for your next walk.

We stopped for a fantastic prawn mayo filled baked potato lunch in the 'Copper Kettle'. Very pleasant staff and well worth a visit.

Leave the town passing the Bridge Inn and, after crossing the river, follow a narrow and very steep lane into Burridge Wood. The track is muddy and uneven so hopefully you haven't changed your walking gear - it will be needed here. Follow the River Barle until Kennel Farm and then it's a short stretch along the main road back to Marsh Bridge.
